Moving abroad

Moving to Andorra: conditions, statuses and procedures in 2026

Moving to Andorra means obtaining a residence authorisation, granted through four routes: employee of an Andorran company, director of your own company, resident without gainful activity, or digital economy. Each has its own conditions, its deposit and its annual quota. Setup Andorra, a private gestoria in Andorra la Vella, has been handling these files for ten years.

WHAT WE ARE ASKED MOST

The five questions people ask before leaving

What are the requirements for settling in Andorra?

They depend on the status. To run your Andorran company you must hold more than 34 % of the capital, hold a management role and pay a €50,000 deposit to the AFA. To live without gainful activity you must invest at least €1,000,000 in Andorran assets. 2026 quotas: 150 authorisations for company directors, 163 for residents without gainful activity.

What salary do you need to live in Andorra?

The law does not set a salary, it sets a minimum income, and only for residency without gainful activity: at least 300 % of the annual Andorran minimum wage. For the active statuses, it is your activity that carries the file, not an income threshold. The real cost depends above all on housing.

What is the average rent in Andorra?

Think in euros per square metre, not in average rent. The official register of contracts gives €18.19 per square metre for leases signed in 2025, against 7,8 € for older leases renewed: a newcomer pays more than twice what the neighbour already settled pays.

Most contracts fall between €500 and €1,000 a month. Source: SICAR register, Govern d’Andorra, November 2025, excluding Escaldes-Engordany, whose data is not yet in the register. The detail of the market is on our page finding a home in Andorra.

What are the drawbacks of living in Andorra?

Housing is expensive and scarce. Highly specialised care often means crossing the border. There is no airport, and winter cuts off some valleys. The country also requires a real presence: a minimum of 90 days per calendar year for residency without gainful activity, failing which the authorisation is lost at renewal.

Can you live in Andorra and work in France?

Not under Andorran resident status: it assumes your activity and the centre of your interests are in Andorra. Cross-border work exists in the other direction, into the Principality, under specific authorisation. And your country of departure can keep taxing you until the conditions for leaving are met.

FOUR ROUTES, NOT ONE

The residency status that fits you

Active status · employee

Employee of an Andorran company

The employer files the application. You have no company to form and no investment to place.

  • A contract with an employer established in Andorra
  • CASS registration from the first day of work: 22 % in total, of which 6,5 % payable by you
  • Quota set each year by decree

Active status · director

Director of your Andorran company

The route for entrepreneurs and the self-employed. It necessarily involves forming a company.

  • Capital: 3 000 € for an SL or SLU, 60 000 € for an SA
  • More than 34 % of the capital, plus a management role
  • Deposit with the AFA: 50 000 €
  • 2026 quota: 150 authorisations for other cases
Forming your company in Andorra

Without gainful activity

Living on your assets or your pension

Often called “passive residency”. It is the status whose conditions changed most in 2026.

  • Invest 1 000 000 € in Andorran assets, or 400 000 € through the Fons d’habitatge
  • AFA deposit: 50 000 € plus 12 000 € per dependant
  • This deposit is not refundable
  • Real presence: 90 days per calendar year

Digital economy

Remote work, entrepreneurship and innovation

A category created by Llei 42/2022 for people working remotely or running an innovative project.

  • The deposit of 50 000 € is not required if the company's purpose falls within these activities
  • Conditions set by the regulation in force when the file is submitted

THE QUESTION PEOPLE ASK LAST

How much do you actually have to put up

The sums involved in a move are not all of the same kind. The AFA deposit goes to the State: you do not see it again. The Andorran investment and the share capital remain your assets, simply tied up in the Principality. Adding them into a single figure, as most guides do, is misleading. Here are the two columns, kept apart.

FROM DECISION TO ARRIVAL

The path, step by step

  1. Know where you stand

The status that fits you depends on what you will do in Andorra, not on your wealth. Five questions are enough to identify it, and to rule out the other three.

  2. Check what your country of departure can still claim from you

This is the stage most firms keep quiet about. Before looking at Andorra, we look at the terms of your departure: that is where the nasty surprises happen.

  3. Build the file

Company, investment, civil status documents, criminal record, insurance, housing. For residency per compte propi, foreign investment authorisation comes before incorporation, and the ministry rules within two months, extendable by half, with silence counting as refusal.

  4. File before the quota is used up

Authorisations are capped each year. Filing early in the year changes the timetable more reliably than any amount of chasing.

  5. Hold on to residency over time

Getting residency takes a few months, keeping it in order takes years: accounts, tax returns, CASS registration, real presence. That is the job of our gestoria.
